Title:
As If It Never Was
Author: Hazel Behrens
Low, rolling hills
Echo forgotten laughter
Narrow, winding river
Whispers of picnics past
Smooth level ground
Hides root cellar memories
Electric pole with useless
wires
Betrays the transformation
A pastoral scene
except for that pole
A house, a home
Vanished
As if it never was
A dream, a shelter
Planted by flowing water
Nestled near gentle slopes
The barn, the shed,
Fences firm
All gone
Winter stillness
reigns
Come spring
Will another dream arise?
Energy surge through new
wires?
Or will horses graze
Along the brook
And pheasants feed
On rolling hills?
